Upwork charges clients a marketplace fee on every payment, reported at 5 percent on the Basic plan (3 percent for eligible US clients paying by bank account, up to 7.99 percent by card), plus a one time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 on each new contract. On a $3,000 a month paid social freelancer that is $90 to $240 a month. The bigger number comes later: if you hire that marketer onto your payroll within 24 months, Upwork's conversion fee on a $60 an hour freelancer is about $16,850.

Upwork's help center pages block automated reading, so the fee figures here are as reported by 2026 guides that quote them, and those guides disagree on the card rate. Each figure is labelled. Rates and salaries are round examples. The $149 a month is our own published price.

Does Upwork charge clients a fee?

Yes. Every payment a client makes to a freelancer, hourly or fixed price, carries a marketplace fee added on top. The rate depends on your plan and how you pay. On the free Basic plan it is reported at 5 percent, dropping to 3 percent for eligible US clients who pay from a bank account, with some 2026 guides quoting up to 7.99 percent when paying by card or PayPal. Business Plus, reported at $49.99 a month, carries a higher fee of about 10 percent (8 percent by bank). Enterprise is negotiated.

Separately, each new contract carries a one time initiation fee, reported at $0.99 to $14.99 depending on the contract size, charged when you fund the first milestone or make the first hourly payment.

How much does Upwork charge clients on a marketing contract?

Because the guides disagree on the card rate, here is the fee on three common marketing engagements at each reported rate, rather than one number:

EngagementPaid to freelancer3% bank5% Basic7.99% card10% Business Plus
Landing page rewrite, 30 hours at $75$2,250 once$67.50$112.50$179.78$225
Paid social specialist, monthly retainer$3,000 a month$1,080 a year$1,800 a year$2,876 a year$3,600 a year
Content marketer, half time at $60$4,800 a month$1,728 a year$2,880 a year$4,602 a year$5,760 a year

The cheapest lever is the payment method. Moving a $4,800 a month contract from card to a US bank account saves close to $2,900 a year if the 7.99 percent card rate applies to you. Check the fee line on your first invoice before you assume which rate you are on.

What is the Upwork contract initiation fee?

It is a one time charge of $0.99 to $14.99 that Upwork adds when a new contract starts, scaled to the contract size. For one long contract it is a rounding error. For a team buying lots of small marketing jobs, say twelve separate ad creative and copy contracts a year, it adds up to as much as $180, and opening one longer contract with milestones avoids most of it. Business Plus is reported to waive it on larger contracts.

The fee you do not see on your invoice

Freelancers pay Upwork too. Their service fee is now set per contract and reported at 0 to 15 percent of what they earn, and most experienced freelancers price it into their rate. A marketer who wants to take home $60 an hour quotes about $66.67 if their fee is 10 percent, or $70.59 at 15 percent. Add your own 5 percent and you pay $70.00 to $74.12 for $60 of work.

So the real platform share of your spend on a marketing contract is not 5 percent. It is the client fee plus whatever fee the freelancer priced in, often 14 to 19 percent of what you pay. That is still lower than the roughly 24 percent that stays with the platform on a Fiverr order, which we work out line by line on our Fiverr fees for buyers page, but it is far from the 3 to 5 percent headline.

How much does it cost to hire an Upwork freelancer full time?

Upwork's terms charge a conversion fee if you move a client relationship off the platform within 24 months of the first contract, for example by hiring the freelancer as an employee. As described in Upwork's help center and quoted by third parties, it is 13.5 percent of the freelancer's hourly rate times 2,080 hours, one year of full time billing.

Freelancer rateTypical marketing role at that rateConversion fee
$45 an hourSocial media or email specialist$12,636
$60 an hourContent or lifecycle marketer$16,848
$75 an hourPaid media or SEO lead$21,060

Here is the division that tells you whether to pay it. Take the conversion fee and divide it by what the platform takes from a full time contract each year. On client fees alone, at 5 percent, converting pays back in about 2.7 years, which sounds like a reason to stay on Upwork. Count the freelancer's fee priced into the rate as well and the picture flips. For a marketer netting $60 an hour whose fee is 10 percent, you pay about $20,800 a year above their take home, against a conversion fee of $18,720 on their $66.67 rate. Converting pays back in under eleven months.

Two honest caveats. Once the person is your employee you add payroll taxes and benefits, so the saving is smaller than the platform share alone. And if the freelancer only works for you ten hours a week, the platform share is a quarter of that and staying put is often right.

Can I pay an Upwork freelancer outside of Upwork?

Not for the first 24 months after you met through Upwork, unless you pay the conversion fee. Paying a freelancer you found there directly to avoid fees breaks the terms of service for both of you and can get both accounts suspended. After the 24 months, or once the conversion fee is paid, you can contract or employ the person directly. At that point you take on what the platform did for you, collecting invoices and paying them on time, which is where accounts payable automation earns its keep if you run several contractors.

When are Upwork fees worth paying for marketing work?

For a defined project you can judge yourself, Upwork is one of the cheapest ways to buy marketing work in the US. The fees are lower than Toptal's margin, the pool is large, and a 15 hour landing page rewrite is a scope few other channels will take. Our Toptal vs Upwork pricing for hiring a marketer comparison puts the same marketer on both and shows a $31,000 to $56,000 a year gap at full time.

Upwork fees stop being worth it when the work is really a role: the same freelancer, most of the week, month after month, and a conversion fee waiting if you ever want to keep them. If you already know the seat is permanent, the cheaper path is to skip the platform and hire for it from the start. A Starter listing here is $149 a month, the person you hire keeps everything you pay them, and you cancel when the role is filled. See what a post includes, or compare other ways to fill the seat on the Upwork alternative for marketing hires page.

Is Upwork cheaper than hiring a marketer?

For part time or project work, usually yes, because you pay only for hours used and carry no payroll cost. For a full time marketing seat, usually no. Between the client fee, the freelancer fee priced into the rate and the conversion fee if you keep them, a full time Upwork marketer at $60 take home costs roughly $20,000 a year more than the same person on your payroll before benefits.
