For the same freelance marketer taking home the same $65 an hour, Upwork costs you about $68 to $80 an hour and Toptal about $95, going by the widely cited Toptal margin example. The gap, roughly $15 to $27 an hour, is what you pay Toptal to do the screening for you. On a full time engagement that is about $31,000 to $56,000 a year. Whether it is worth it depends on one question: do you have somebody on the team who can judge a marketer's work before you have paid for a month of it?
Toptal publishes only its $79 monthly subscription and does not publish rates or its margin, so Toptal figures below are reported and labelled as such. Upwork publishes its client fees. The $149 a month is our own published price.
How much does Toptal cost compared to Upwork?
The two charge you in opposite ways, and that is why headline comparisons mislead. Upwork shows you its fee: a client marketplace fee on every payment, reported at 5 percent on the Basic plan, or 3 percent for eligible US clients paying from a bank account, plus a one time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99. Toptal hides its fee inside the rate. You pay a $79 subscription, then an hourly rate that already contains the platform's cut.
| Charge | Toptal | Upwork (Basic plan) |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | $79 a month, published | None on Basic |
| Fee on each payment | Inside the rate, not published | 5%, or 3% paying by US bank account |
| Starting a contract | Reported $500 deposit in older client reports, not in the current FAQ | $0.99 to $14.99 once per new freelancer |
| Hourly rates | Reported $60 to $150, $200 and up for specialists | Set by each freelancer, from about $10 to well over $150 |
| Trial | Up to two weeks, unsatisfactory time not billed | None built in; you judge the work yourself |
| Hiring the freelancer as an employee | Possible, fee negotiated and not published | Conversion fee of 13.5% of a year of the freelancer's rate, within 24 months |
Look at the fee row and Upwork seems far cheaper. Look at the rates row and the two overlap almost entirely. Neither view answers the question a buyer actually has, which is what the same person costs on each platform.
What does the same marketer cost on Toptal vs Upwork?
Hold the marketer constant and the comparison gets clear. Say a lifecycle or paid media specialist wants to take home $65 an hour. On Toptal, the widely cited example is a client billed $95 an hour while the freelancer receives about $60 to $65. On Upwork, the freelancer also pays a service fee of 0 to 15 percent out of their rate, so they price it up to net the same $65, and you pay the 5 percent client fee on top.
| Freelancer nets $65 an hour | You pay per hour | Full time, a year | Half time, a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upwork, freelancer fee 0% | $68.25 | $141,960 | $70,980 |
| Upwork, freelancer fee 10% | $75.83 | $157,733 | $78,867 |
| Upwork, freelancer fee 15% | $80.29 | $167,012 | $83,506 |
| Toptal, reported example | $95.00 plus $79 a month | $198,548 | $99,748 |
Full time is 2,080 hours, half time 1,040. The gap between the Toptal row and the Upwork rows runs from about $31,500 to $56,600 a year full time, and half that on a half time engagement. That money buys three things: a screening process you did not run, a trial you can walk away from without paying, and a replacement if the match fails. For a team with no senior marketer in house, those are real services. For a team that already has one, they are services you are paying for twice.

Is Toptal better than Upwork for hiring a marketer?
Toptal is better when you cannot evaluate the work yourself. If the founder is hiring the first paid media person and has never run a Google Ads account, a shortlist of screened candidates and a two week trial remove the biggest risk, which is spending three months with the wrong person before anyone notices. Paying about $20 an hour more for that is sensible.
Upwork is better when you can. A head of marketing hiring a contract SEO writer can read ten portfolios in an afternoon and spot the good ones, so Toptal's screening adds little. Upwork also handles small scopes Toptal will not: a 15 hour landing page rewrite or a one off email audit sits well below the reported 20 hour weekly minimum that sets the floor on a Toptal engagement.
One honest caveat about the marketing pool on each. Toptal is a generalist network that grew up around software engineering, and reviewers note that marketing is a subset rather than its core. Upwork's marketing pool is enormous and uneven. Neither is sorted by marketing channel the way a marketing only marketplace is, which is the comparison on our MarketerHire vs Toptal pricing page.
What does it cost to hire a Toptal or Upwork freelancer full time?
This is the number that catches employers, because the contractor who works out well is usually the one you want to keep. Upwork's help center describes a conversion fee of 13.5 percent of the freelancer's rate times 2,080 hours if you take the relationship off platform within 24 months of the first contract. For a marketer billing $72 an hour on Upwork, that is about $20,200, paid once, on top of the salary you then offer. Toptal says conversion is possible for the most part and agreed case by case, and it does not publish a price, so the figure is whatever gets negotiated.
If you already know the seat is permanent, starting on a marketplace and converting later is the most expensive route to an employee. A $20,200 conversion fee is more than eleven years of a $149 a month job listing, and a listing puts the role in front of marketers who want an employer rather than another client. Marketplaces are the right tool for work with an end date. They are an expensive recruiting agency for work without one.
Is Upwork cheaper than Toptal for a small marketing project?
Yes, and usually by more than the fees suggest. A 30 hour project on Upwork with a $75 an hour freelancer costs about $2,380 including the 5 percent client fee and a contract initiation fee. The same scope on Toptal at a reported $100 an hour is $3,000 plus the $79 subscription, and many Toptal engagements are set up around a weekly minimum rather than a fixed scope. For short, well defined marketing work you can judge yourself, Upwork is the cheaper and more flexible option.
There is a third route for a small project, and it avoids both marketplaces: go direct. Plenty of experienced marketers sell fixed scope packages themselves, and you can hire a freelancer from their own gig page without a platform taking a slice of every invoice. Which should you use to hire a marketer?
| Your situation | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Defined project, you can judge the work | Upwork | Lowest cost per hour for the same talent, handles small scopes |
| Defined project, nobody in house can judge it | Toptal | Screening and a two week trial are worth the premium |
| Cover for a few months while you hire | Toptal or Upwork | Rent the gap, but do not pay a conversion fee to keep the person |
| A permanent seat on the marketing team | A direct hire | No hourly margin, no conversion fee, the knowledge stays |
If you landed here pricing a contractor because the real need is a marketer on the team, the cheapest version of that decision is to skip the marketplace entirely. Post the role where marketers look for marketing jobs, pay a flat $149 a month while it is open, and stop the listing when it is filled. Other ways to fill the same seat, with their costs, are compared on our Upwork alternative for marketing hires page.
