Hiring a marketing coordinator in the US costs about $71,000 to $83,000 in the first year if you find the person yourself, and $79,000 to $95,000 if a contingency recruiter does. That assumes a $55,000 base salary, the middle of the $45,000 to $65,000 band most US coordinators are paid, plus 25 to 40 percent for payroll taxes and benefits, plus the cost of finding, interviewing and equipping the hire. Salary is only about two thirds of the real bill.
Salary bands come from our marketing salary guide. Recruiter percentages are typical US contingency terms. Our own price, $149 a month for one live role, is the only published rate card in this article.
The first year cost of a marketing coordinator, line by line
Here is the whole bill for one $55,000 coordinator. Every row is something finance will see, or something your team will quietly absorb.
| Cost line | Low | High | What drives it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base salary | $55,000 | $55,000 | Midpoint of the US band. Use your own city. |
| Payroll taxes and benefits | $13,750 | $22,000 | The usual 1.25 to 1.4 times loading. Health insurance is most of the spread. |
| Finding the person, job post route | $298 | $1,500 | Two months of a $149 listing at the low end, a sponsored general board campaign at the high end. |
| Finding the person, recruiter route | $8,250 | $13,750 | 15 to 25 percent of first year base, paid once on a successful hire. |
| Your team's interview hours | $900 | $1,500 | 15 to 25 hours at a loaded $60 an hour. Never invoiced, always real. |
| Tools and equipment | $1,500 | $3,000 | Laptop and the seats in your design, email and project tools. |
Add the rows for the route you pick. Recruiting yourself lands at $71,448 to $83,000. Using a recruiter lands at $79,400 to $95,250. The gap between the two routes is almost entirely the fee, and on an entry level role the fee is hard to justify, because the applicant pool is large rather than scarce.
How much does a marketing coordinator make?
A US marketing coordinator typically earns $45,000 to $65,000 in base salary with 0 to 2 years of experience. Pay above the band in New York, San Francisco and Boston, and at the bottom of it in smaller metros. A coordinator who also owns a channel, such as email or paid social, is really a specialist and costs $60,000 to $85,000.
Do not advertise below $45,000 for a full time US role. You will get applicants, but mostly people with no experience and no plan to stay past the first raise. The cheapest way to waste $70,000 is to hire the wrong coordinator at the lowest number.
Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer than a coordinator?
A freelance marketing coordinator charges roughly $25 to $60 an hour. At 20 hours a week for a year that is 1,040 hours, or $26,000 to $62,400, with no benefits and no payroll tax. That is cheaper than a full time hire only when the work really fits half a week. Past 30 hours a week the hourly rate catches the salary, and you still carry the management time.
| Option | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Full time coordinator, hired directly | $71,000 to $83,000 in year one | A standing calendar of campaigns, assets and reporting |
| Full time coordinator, through a recruiter | $79,000 to $95,000 in year one | Almost never, unless you cannot screen a large pool |
| Staffing agency temp | $25 to $45 an hour before markup | Covering a leave or a seasonal spike |
| Freelancer, 20 hours a week | $26,000 to $62,400 a year | A defined project, or interim help while you hire |
Agency temps carry a markup on top of that pay rate, which is why a $35 an hour temp is billed well above $35. We priced that arithmetic in our piece on staffing agency markup for marketing contractors.
When is a virtual assistant enough?
If the work is scheduling, inbox triage, data entry and posting finished assets, a virtual assistant covers it for a fraction of a coordinator's salary. If the job needs judgement about campaigns, someone who can brief a designer, read a report and tell you what to change, you need a marketer. Plenty of small teams split the job: an assistant for the admin load, and a marketing hire later. When you only need the admin half, a virtual assistant with a verified identity is the cheaper test before you commit to payroll.
How long does it take to hire a marketing coordinator?
Expect 3 to 7 weeks from posting to signed offer for a coordinator. Entry level roles fill faster than senior ones because the pool is deep, but screening takes the time you saved. A posted salary band and a narrow description cut the pile. If you are also weighing a bigger hire, see what hiring a digital marketer costs for comparison.
How much does it cost to post a marketing coordinator job?
Posting a coordinator job costs nothing to a few thousand dollars, depending on the board and how long the role stays open. General boards bill sponsored jobs by budget, and an entry level role attracts the heaviest volume of unqualified applicants, so you pay in screening hours. On MarketerJob a listing is $149 a month for one live role, with no percentage of salary and no fee when you hire. Every major board is priced side by side on job posting cost.
The role-specific page, hire a marketing coordinator, has the sample listing and the screening questions. You can post a role and see it live the same day.
Four ways to lower the cost
Post the salary band. Several states require it already, and a posted range filters out candidates you could never afford before the phone screen. That saves interview hours, the one line you control fully.
Write the job around outcomes. "Run the weekly email send and the monthly report" attracts a different applicant than "marketing coordinator, fast paced environment".
Skip the recruiter. On a $55,000 role a 20 percent fee is $11,000. A coordinator is usually findable with a listing and a clear brief.
Post where the audience is already filtered. A board that only lists marketing roles reaches people who chose marketing, so fewer applications and a better shortlist.
