Hiring a marketing director in the US costs about $188,000 to $216,000 in the first year if you recruit the person yourself, and $216,000 to $250,000 if a contingency recruiter finds them. That assumes a $145,000 base salary, inside the $110,000 to $185,000 band most US marketing directors are paid, plus 25 to 40 percent for payroll taxes and benefits, plus the cost of finding them. A retained search adds more again. The salary is set by the market. The route you hire through is the part you choose, and at director level it moves the first year bill by $30,000 or more.

Salary bands come from our marketing salary guide, which aggregates Indeed, Glassdoor and Salary.com. Recruiter percentages are typical US contingency and retained terms. Our own price, $149 a month for one live role, is the only published rate card in this article.

The first year cost of a marketing director, line by line

This is the whole bill for one $145,000 marketing director hired in 2026. Swap in your own salary and the arithmetic still holds, because every other line is either a percentage of base or a fixed cost of running the search.

Add the rows for your route. Recruiting directly lands at roughly $188,000 to $216,000. A contingency recruiter takes it to $216,000 to $250,000. A retained search on the same person lands near $229,000 to $272,000. The salary did not change between those three rows. Only the way you found the person did.

How much does a marketing director cost compared with a marketing manager?

A marketing director costs about $60,000 to $75,000 more in the first year than a marketing manager. A US marketing manager on a $100,000 base runs about $127,000 to $142,000 fully loaded when hired directly, against $188,000 to $216,000 for a $145,000 director. The gap is the salary step plus the larger loading, because director packages carry bigger bonuses.

The difference that matters is scope. A manager runs channels inside a plan. A director writes the plan, owns the budget and usually manages two to six people. If what you need is one more person executing, the director premium buys capacity you will not use. Our marketing manager hiring page has that band and the full manager bill is on how much it costs to hire a marketing manager. The difference in responsibilities is set out in marketing director vs marketing manager.

How much should a marketing director make?

A US marketing director typically earns $110,000 to $185,000 in base salary with eight or more years of experience. Published averages run from about $125,000 at Indeed to $195,000 at Salary.com, because each source samples different company sizes. Expect the top of the band in New York, San Francisco and Boston, and at venture backed software companies.

The band is wide enough that where you post inside it is the biggest decision on this page. Moving the offer from $130,000 to $160,000 adds $37,500 to $42,000 a year once loading is counted, every year, which is more than a contingency fee and it recurs. Post the band you can actually pay. Several US states require a range in the ad already, and it stops you interviewing finalists you could never afford. The title variants and what each level owns are on the marketing director hiring page.

How much does a headhunter charge to hire a marketing director?

A headhunter usually charges 20 to 25 percent of a marketing director's first year base salary on contingency, or 25 to 35 percent of first year cash on a retained search. On a $145,000 director that is $29,000 to $36,250 contingency, and roughly $41,700 to $58,400 retained once a bonus is included. Retained fees are paid in thirds, so a third is due before you see a shortlist.

At director level the fee is easier to justify than for a manager. The pool is smaller, good candidates are usually employed and not browsing, and a bad hire costs a year of plan. The fee buys a shortlist and normally a 90 day replacement guarantee. Every term worth negotiating, including the guarantee and what counts as first year cash, is priced on marketing director headhunter fees. For a C level search the percentages rise again, which is covered on CMO recruiter fees.

The cost nobody budgets, your leadership team's hours

A director search uses the most expensive hours in the company. A typical process: the hiring executive reads 60 applications, runs 8 screening calls, then 4 finalists meet a panel of the CEO, a sales leader and a product leader, with a strategy presentation at the end. That is roughly 40 to 60 hours of senior time. At a loaded $100 an hour, it is $4,000 to $6,000, and it lands in the weeks those people are meant to be running the business.

The way to shrink it is to move judgement earlier. Ask every shortlisted candidate for the same short written exercise, such as a 90 day plan for one real channel, and grade it before anyone books a panel. Teams that run several leadership searches a year put that first round on an assessment platform that scores written work samples, so the panel only meets people who can already do the work on paper. Posting where only marketers look does the same filtering one step earlier, before a sales manager or a recent graduate ever applies.

Is it cheaper to hire a fractional marketing director?

For a year, yes, often by half. A fractional marketing director in the US usually costs $4,000 to $8,000 a month for 8 to 40 hours, which is $48,000 to $96,000 a year with no benefits, no bonus and no recruiter fee. A full time director hired directly costs $188,000 to $216,000 in the same year. The fractional option buys fewer hours, so compare the price of the work, not the title.

RouteFirst year costHours you getBest for
Hire directly from a job postAbout $188,000 to $216,000Full time, yoursA permanent owner of the plan and the team
Hire through a contingency recruiterAbout $216,000 to $250,000Full time, yoursA small pool or a role you cannot advertise
Retained executive searchAbout $229,000 to $272,000Full time, yoursA confidential replacement
Fractional marketing director$48,000 to $96,0008 to 40 hours a monthA plan and a budget before you can fund the seat

The honest case for fractional is a company that needs strategy before it needs a team. If nobody would report to the director yet, a part time leader sets the plan for a fraction of the cost and often helps hire the first full time marketer. Once there is a team to run every day, the hours run out. What the fractional role covers, and how it differs from a fractional CMO, is on fractional marketing director.

How much does it cost to post a marketing director job?

Posting a marketing director job costs from nothing to several thousand dollars, depending on the board and how long the search runs. Indeed bills sponsored jobs per result from a daily budget, and LinkedIn bills promoted jobs per click or view. Director searches often run two to four months, so a daily budget compounds. On MarketerJob a Starter listing is $149 a month, with no percentage of salary and no fee when you hire.

Tech companies are often quoted a third route: an annual employer branding contract. Built In, the board many software companies use, prints no prices, and its partnerships are reported at a median of $15,847 a year. Divided by one marketing hire, that is more than a contingency fee. The arithmetic per hire is on Built In pricing and job posting cost, and every major board is compared on job posting cost.

Four ways to bring the cost down

Decide the level before the salary. If the person will not manage anyone in their first year, you may be hiring a senior manager at a director price. Write the scope first and let it set the band.

Post the band and the budget they will own. Director candidates filter on both. A posted range and a stated annual marketing budget remove the finalists who were never going to accept.

Use a recruiter only where the pool is thin. A demand generation director in a large US metro is usually findable by advertising. Keep the 20 to 35 percent fee for a confidential replacement or a narrow specialism.

Post where the audience is already filtered. A board that only lists marketing roles reaches people who chose marketing as a career. One live director role on MarketerJob is $149 a month, and you cancel it the month the seat is filled.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total cost of hiring a marketing director?

The total first year cost of a US marketing director is about $188,000 to $216,000 when you hire directly on a $145,000 base, including payroll taxes, benefits, interview time, tools and a job posting. Through a contingency recruiter it rises to $216,000 to $250,000, and through a retained search to roughly $229,000 to $272,000.

How much is a marketing director per hour?

A full time marketing director on a $145,000 base costs about $87 to $98 an hour once taxes and benefits are loaded, based on 2,080 working hours a year. A fractional marketing director is usually priced at $150 to $500 an hour, with most senior operators at $200 to $350, which is higher per hour but bought in far fewer hours.

Do I need a marketing director or a marketing manager?

You need a marketing director if the role will own the annual plan, the budget and at least one direct report. If the work is running channels inside a plan someone else sets, a marketing manager does it for about $60,000 to $75,000 less in the first year.
